Depot Dad One Year Later

On June 1st, Depot Dad will have been live for one year. This is my 134th post. I really can’t believe it.

One year ago I was a mess. A happy mess, but still a mess. I had no idea how I was going to go forward with my life. I figured a bunch of other people must have survived, even prospered, after the end of their marriages or as single parents and I went on the internet to find them.

Wow, did I get lucky.

In hardly any time at all I came across I Heart Single Parents. It was just getting started at that point, and if memory serves, had about two hundred members (it has almost 2800 now). But what it may have lacked in membership, it more than made up for in enthusiasm and positive attitude. That was largely due to the efforts and spirit of its two founders, Morgan and Claire. I was welcomed into the community and found a wealth of practical lifestyle tips as well as some wickedly smart and distinct voices.

One of those voices was Ms. Single Mama, who, besides being an active member at iheart, also published her own personal bog. Maybe more than anyone, she helped establish in my mind that single parenting could be joyful, empowering, and even damn sexy. It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life to find myself playing tour guide and host to both Ms. Single Mama and Morgan when circumstances allowed for both of them to be in the San Francisco area the following month.

Meanwhile I had also made contact with a local single mom blogger, Rachel, of SIngle Mom Seeking. Rachel is just simply a wonderful person and I feel lucky to count her among my closest friends now. If you ever get a chance to meet her in person, be prepared to momentarily lose the ability to breathe when you see her piercing blue eyes.

I’ve also had the good fortune to meet other single parent bloggers in person as the year went on. I met David from Dad’s House, Tonya from The Quest for T, and Susan from One Woman Show. Not bad considering most of these bloggers live in different time zones.

In fact, to keep track of all of the single parent bloggers I’ve met and still want to meet, I’ve developed the Single Parent Blogger Bingo Card.

You can make one for yourself. Just put yourself in the center space and fill the other spaces with all of your favorite bloggers. Whoever fills their card first wins. Wins? Wins what? Heck I don’t know. I came up with the game, I can’t come up with everything!
